3 Terms and definitions
For the purposes of this document, the following terms and definitions apply.
3.1
lithium-ion traction batteries applied in underground mines
lithium-ion batteries (hereinafter referred to as "batteries") providing power for underground mine equipment, with a rated capacity of each battery cell greater than 10Ah
3.2
battery cell
basic unit device that converts chemical energy and electric energy to each other
Note: It generally consists of the positive electrode, negative electrode, diaphragm, electrolyte, housing, terminal and pressure relief structure, and is designed to be rechargeable.

3.3
battery module
assembly consisting of at least 5 battery cells connected in series
Note: There may be thermal insulation material layers between the battery cells constituting the battery module.
[Source: GB 38031-2025, 3.2, modified]
3.4
rated capacity
capacity value of a battery cell or battery module declared by the manufacturer
Note: The rated capacity is usually expressed in ampere-hours (Ah).
[Source: GB 38031-2025, 3.8, modified]
3.5
practical capacity
capacity released from a fully charged battery cell or battery module under the conditions specified by the manufacturer
[Source: GB 38031-2025, 3.9, modified]
3.6
state-of-charge
percentage of capacity which may be released by the current battery cell or battery module under the discharge conditions specified by the manufacturer in respect of the practical capacity
[Source: GB 38031-2025, 3.10, modified]
3.7
housing crack
mechanical damage to the housing of battery cell or battery module due to internal or external factors, resulting in exposure or spillage of inner matter
[Source: GB 38031-2025, 3.13, modified]
3.8
leakage
phenomenon where visible matter leaks out from the battery cell or battery module
[Source: GB 38031-2025, 3.14, modified]
3.9
fire
situation that any part of the battery cell or battery module keeps burning (for a duration of greater than 1s)
Note: Visual judgment shall be made without disassembling the test object. The spark and arc discharge is not considered as combustion.
[Source: GB 38031-2025, 3.12, modified]
3.10
explosion
sudden release of energy sufficient to generate pressure waves or jets
Note: The pressure waves or jets may cause structural or physical damage to the surrounding area.

3.11
thermal runaway
uncontrollable temperature rise of the battery caused by the exothermic chain reaction of the battery cell
[Source: GB 38031-2025, 3.16]
3.12
thermal propagation
successive thermal runaway of the rest battery cells caused by the thermal runaway of a battery cell in a battery module
