Burning behavior safety technical specification of thermal insulation materials and products for building
1 Scope
This document provides a classification of thermal insulation materials and products for buildings, specifies fire safety performance requirements, test methods, evaluation rules, and labeling.
This document applies to thermal insulation materials and products used in building walls, roofs, and floor insulation.
2 Normative References
The following documents contain provisions that, through reference in this text, constitute essential requirements of this document. For dated references, only the edition cited applies. For undated references, the latest version (including any amendments) applies.
GB/T 4132 Thermal Insulation – Terminology
GB 8624 Classification for Combustion Behavior of Building Materials and Products
GB/T 40248 Fire Safety Management for Occupied Public Venues
GB 55037 General Code for Fire Protection of Buildings
3 Terms and Definitions
Terms and definitions defined in GB/T 4132, GB 8624, and GB/T 40248, as well as the following, apply to this document.
3.1 Thermal Insulation Materials and Products for Buildings
Thermal insulation materials and products used in building insulation.
3.2 Homogeneous Products
Thermal insulation materials and products composed of a single material or with uniform density and composition.
3.3 Composite Insulation Products
Non-homogeneous thermal insulation products made of two or more adjacent layers of different materials.
3.4 Inorganic Thermal Insulation Materials and Products
Thermal insulation materials and products primarily composed of inorganic non-metallic materials.
3.5 Organic Thermal Insulation Materials and Products
Thermal insulation materials and products primarily composed of organic polymer materials.
3.6 Assembly Occupancy
Indoor spaces with concentrated personnel.
Note: Also referred to as "public gathering places," including hospitals, schools, nursing homes, kindergartens, libraries, exhibition halls, production workshops, and employee dormitories.
4 Classification
4.1 Thermal insulation materials and products for buildings are classified as homogeneous or composite based on material composition.
4.2 Homogeneous products are further divided into inorganic and organic types.
Note: Classification examples are provided in Appendix A.
5 Requirements
5.1 Combustion Performance Grade Requirements
The combustion performance grade of thermal insulation materials and products shall comply with Table 1. If the application site is specified, the requirements of GB 55037 shall also be met.
5.2 Smoke Production, Droplet Behavior, and Toxicity Requirements
When used in assembly occupancy buildings, the smoke production level shall be ≥ s2, droplet behavior level ≥ d1, and toxicity level ≥ t1.
6 Test Methods
6.1 General Principles
Testing shall be conducted on the entire product. For on-site foamed or processed materials, test specimens shall be prepared according to product technical documents, with key preparation conditions recorded.
6.2 Combustion performance testing and grading shall follow GB 8624.
7 Evaluation Rules
If the combustion performance grade meets the requirements in Section 5, the product is deemed compliant; otherwise, it is non-compliant.
Product packaging and the smallest unit shall be labeled with:
a) Product name and combustion performance grade;
b) Smoke production, droplet behavior, and toxicity grades (if applicable);
c) Manufacturer’s name;
d) Traceable quality information;
e) For on-site foamed organic products, flame retardant composition and ratio must be indicated.
